Award winning, national electronic music events agency Beastwang, holding their 10 year anniversary celebrations at the o2 Academy, contacted us to create promotional material and event collateral for the occasion. The celebration would be of their astronomic rise from an underground event to a national and industry leading entity within the drum and bass music scene.
Approach
Given the landmark nature of the event we pulled out all the stops to produce a custom 3D chrome typeface to tie together Beastwang’s brand with the sci-fi retro future narrative of the 10 year anniversary sub-brand. We identified three visual keystones for the project, starting with deep space as the context. Woven into this was neon lighting, with simple shapes in neon wireframes, harking back to the heyday of sci-fi arts and the birth of computer gaming. We polished these elements off with a heavy use of chrome, inspired by Japanese sci-fi art legend, Hajime Sorayama. The retro narrative was moved into the present using the ‘gun fingers’ visual motif, embodying the underground scene. To bring this all together, we used faux analogue processing to add layers of feedback and noise to replicate analogue TVs and VHS, cementing the project in the golden age which inspired it.
OUTCOME
The resulting printed and social media promotional campaign was such a success that the project has birthed a new visual language which Beastwang is adopting into its main brand. Here’s to another 10 years of success.
